About the project

1st Edition

“The Museums in Eastern Transylvania” project represents an invitation to discover the historical-cultural heritage of this region and of the entire country as well. Thus, with this project, we aim to promote five museums from Harghita and Covasna counties as follows:

- The Museum of Transylvanian Life in Micloșoara
- The Szekler Museum of Ciuc in Miercurea Ciuc
- The Molnar Istvan Museum in Cristuru Secuiesc
- The Straw Hats Museum in Criseni
- The Ethnographic Museum Toplita

Hosted in a superb noble castle (the Konlaky Mansion) in the village of Miclosoara, Covasna County, The Museum of Transylvanian Life aims to reconstitute the life of the noble families of the 17th , 18th and 19th centuries. Here we can find a special collection ofobjects, elements of the late Renaissance and early Baroque that reflect, among otherthings, the German presence in Transylvanian life.

The Szekler Museum of Ciuc, perhaps the most famous objective included in this project, is housed in the impressive fortress of Miko, the oldest and most important historical monument of Miercurea Ciuc. The 5 permanent exhibitions of the museum present the history of the fortress and the city, as well as “the pace of the time” dedicated to crafts and activities practiced by the locals, but also the sacred treasures or the Franciscan typography.

Organized in the building of the former casino of Cristuru Secuiesc, The Molnar Istvan Museum comprises several sections including archeology, history, numismatics, natural sciences, ethnography, or fine art. Here, among other things, we can find the Dacian silver treasure from Cehetel and the Salasuri treasure containing over 3000 coins from the Roman era, but also the exhibition with traditional technical equipment organized on the site of the former bowling alley.

The Straw Hat Museum in Crişeni, Harghita County, is distinguished by its originality, here being exhibited an important tradition of the inhabitants of this area. Hosted in a 130-year-old peasant house that includes an entrance for the cat, the museum gathers ornaments made of wheat ears, decorations made of straws and, of course, as the name suggests, various types of straw hats having multiple meanings. Here we can also follow the technical process of making a straw hat and as a central element we discover the giant hat 2 meters in diameter and 2.65 kg which required 12 and a half days of work.

The last but certainly not the last objective included in this project, The Ethnographic Museum Toplita has as its central theme “the thread of life”, presenting the life of a simple man in the Topliţa area passing through all stages of life. The museum impresses, among other things, through an important collection of popular garments, some of them over 100 years old, with various influences from the areas of Moldova, Mureş etc.

Besides these objectives, Harghita and Covasna counties also benefit from numerous other attractions so that you have every reason to come to discover this wonderful area together with “The Museums in Eastern Transylvania”!

2nd Edition

With the second edition of "Museums in Eastern Transylvania", we bring to light five more museums from Eastern Transylvania, this time from Brașov and Mureș counties:

- "Nicolae Frunteș" Ethnographic, Olympic and Contemporary Art Museum from Şirnea;
- Codlea Traditions Museum;
- Făgăraș County Museum "Valer Literat";
- The History Museum of Sighisoara;
- "Anton Badea" Ethnographic Museum from Reghin.

"Nicolae Frunteș" Ethnographic, Olympic and Contemporary Art Museum in Şirnea includes a rich collection, with various elements highlighting the traditional wear and occupations specific to the area, or the legend of Bran, the museum sheltering even an Olympic section, displaying the Olympic torch that carried the flame of the 1972 Olympic Games from Munich.

Hosted in a historical building from the 18th century, Codlea Traditions Museum benefits from the advantages of modern technology - local history and traditions are represented virtually through augmented reality, visitors having the opportunity as well to discover here numismatics, paintings, old books or archaeology items. Also interesting is the building itself, with its original architectural elements, like the neoclassical vault dating from 1828.

Sheltered by the impressive architectural ensemble of Făgăraş Citadel, which has seen many changes over several centuries and which currently includes the castle and the bastion fortress, The Făgăraș County Museum "Valer Literat" offers a travel in time through the chronologically structured exhibition in the south wing of the castle in which, the rooms named "Mailat Houses" display objects dating from prehistoric times, the medieval period and up to the modern and contemporary era.

Founded at the end of the 19th century, The History Museum of Sighisoara is housed in the Clock Tower, the symbol of the city which, together with the entire citadel, has been an integral part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 1999. The exhibition, organized vertically, across seven rooms arranged on six levels, presents the most diverse elements: from archaeological items from the Bronze Age, the Roman or the Dacian era to wooden and metal tower clock mechanisms.

"Anton Badea" Ethnographic Museum from Reghin brings in a permanent exhibition touching several themes: "The women in family and society, "The bread route" or "The thread of life", plus traditional occupations and Romanian, Saxon and Hungarian specific elements, such as traditional clothing, icons or pieces of furniture, displayed in the museum courtyard, in 3 traditional houses, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries.

We hope that we have awakened your interest in also discovering "The Museums in Eastern Transylvania - 2nd edition"!
