The Museum of Transylvanian Life

The Museum of Transylvanian Life from Micloșoara from Miclosoara, Covasna county, was established in 2017 in the Kalnoky Manor, this being the former hunting castle of the family with the same name, with the purpose of presenting to the tourists the lifestyle of the noble families of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

The museum has an approximate area of 500 sqm, distributed on the first floor and on the ground floor; on the first floor there are five rooms and two bedrooms located in the tower.

The first room to which is attached a bedroom (with bathtub and washbasin, specific to the nobles of the times the Biedermeier hall illustrates the German presence in the Transylvanian life. Here we can find the massive German furniture from the first half of the 19th century, as well as a Viennese piano, but also a terracotta stove rebuilt from the 18th century. At the entrance there is the Latin inscription which translates as “the ones who hope don’t die”, this being the motto of the Kalnoky family.

The second room, the Grand Palace, is the most representative one, here being the place where the festive meals and dances were held. Several special elements attract attention here, among them being an old musical instrument, similar as shape to a piano, but having the musicality of a guitar. There is also a copy of the portrait painting of the castle founder Samuel Kalnoky, the collection of oriental carpets from the 17 to 20 th centuries, the Rococo style mirror or the dowry chest from southern Germany (1702).

Going further we discover the “the Lady’s house”,specific to the 17th and 18th centuries, whose distinctive element is the Renaissance-style corner, with windows with lenses that concentrate light, in this area embroidery and sewing being practiced. Also, in this room are exhibited the clothing representative for these centuries, as well as various illustrations and an old book in Latin.

Then we stop in “the house of the Lord”,the room of the noble Kalnoky Denes, a former writer and traveler from the 19th century, where we can find various objects such as weapons, a travel toilet (used in carriage trips), the original work desk or “mashrarabiya”an oriental wooden object built in the style of a door. The floor of the museum ends with the “German Salon” which includes, among other things, the exhibition of the noble family coat of arms of Szekler origin.

On the ground floor there are exposed copies of the documents from the archive that show the history of the place, but also fragments of the stoves discovered during the restoration of the castle and further used subsequently for their reconstruction. Then we can find the traditional cuisine with objects specific to Transylvanian gastronomy as well as the cellar decorated according to the ethnic groups in the area, there being several parts in Romanian style, German or Szekler, but also a still functional fountain.
