Codlea Traditions Museum

Codlea Traditions Museum was established in 2016 touching multiple themes such as ethnography, history, numismatics, painting, archaeology, documents, old books and communist industry. The museum is sheltered by a historical building from the 18th century, which used to be the town hall, and is organized on three floors: basement, ground floor and first floor, displaying six permanent exhibitions and a temporary one.

At the entrance, on the right side, you can visit the exhibition located in the basement, with which the museum was inaugurated called "The Exhibition of Donations", which gathers together various objects relevant to the history of the locality such as the model of the Black Fortress built by the Teutonic knights in the 13th century on Măgura Codlei mountain at an altitude of 980 m, pieces of furniture and old images from Codlea. Also, here can be found Romanian, Saxon and Szekler traditional clothing, a document from 1852 kept in a sealed glass capsule and an object from 1707, the mercy box, belonging to the Fortified Evangelical Church located in the immediate vicinity of the museum - a superb 13th century monument.

Downstairs to the left, in the first of three rooms, the exhibition "From Codlea gathered..." reveals objects among the most diverse, donated by the inhabitants, such as a model of a wooden water pipe belonging to the first installations in the area and a cast iron inkwell, from the "La belle époque" period. The next two rooms faithfully reproduce the image of traditional Romanian and Saxon rooms, in which we find specific elements such as a loom and Saxon furniture, hand-painted in vivid colors, obtained naturally from plants and minerals.

Upstairs, we find two permanent exhibitions, the first being dedicated to Aurel Bordenache, painter of the Royal House settled in Codlea, and the other one, titled "Codlea's Treasury", reveals architectural elements of the original building, such as the neoclassical vault from 1828 and the original partition wall, built using the old construction technique with wood and quicklime.

Besides these, here can be found religious objects from the oldest Romanian Orthodox Church in Codlea and from the Evangelical Church, from the latter the museum holding the oldest object from its heritage, a pewter cup from 1647, used for church wine and reminding of Thomas Göbble’s legend about which you will find out more in the museum.

Although the third room on the floor is intended for temporary exhibitions which are organized periodically on various themes, here can be also found some permanent items related to numismatics, archeology and old books. It should be noted that the museum benefits from modern technology which involves the representation of local history and traditions through augmented and virtual reality and, in addition to the detailed labeling of all heritage objects, the visitors can also enjoy a professional guided tour, provided by the two museographers.
