The Csiki Szekely Museum
The Csiki Szekely Museum was founded in 1930 and it is housed (since 1970) in the impressive Miko fortress, the oldest and most important historical monument of Miercurea Ciuc city. In this museum there are five permanent exhibitions, two of them being organized on the ground floor, the others on the first floor.
Right at the entrance, on the left side, we have an exhibition with 4 rooms dedicated to the history of the Miko fortress where we can observe the original floor discovered after the in-situ excavations as well as remnants of the kitchen of the castle used for cooking food for officers. Here we can also find the fountain of the fortress, as well as the bastion with military vestments, armor and weapons. The second exhibition located on the ground floor and entitled “the pace of time” is arranged over 4 halls. The first one is dedicated to the shepherds, being exposed herearranges the environment of a mountain sheepfold, a place for sleeping and processing milk.
Moving upstairs we’ll find the other 3 exhibitions, the history of the city being the best represented, having dedicated 7 halls, starting with the geographical location and ending with the 20th century era. We’ll find in these halls, among other things, the first documents attesting the existence of communities on these lands and the document attesting the title of the city dating from 1558
The Franciscan’s life is also represented in one of these rooms and there is also a room dedicated to fairs, which were organized on Wednesday (“Miercurea” in Romanian), hence the name of the city, the Hungarian word “Csik” meaning stripe, from the city settlement as a stripe between the mountains. We can see here objects that were sold in the fair as well as a numismatic collection specific to those times, but there is also a 3D representation of an old fair. Then we can discover the old coat of arms of the city with the symbols specific to the Szeklers (sun and moon), as well as the small businesses and crafts that were practiced in the old days.
The other two exhibitions can be found in a common place with 4 rooms. Two of these are dedicated to the sacred values; we can notice here a very old bible restored from the 16th century, as well as the icon painted on wood with 3D elements from the 14th century. The other two rooms house the Franciscan binder and printing house, this being the only Catholic printing house in Transylvania thanks to which the Catholic religion survived here in the second part of the 17th century
